Frequently Asked Questions

What licence do I need to drive a motorhome?

This depends on the Maximum Permitted Mass (MPM) of the motorhome in question, and on the classes on your licence.
Essentially, a motorhome with a MPM of 3500kg or less can be driven on a class B (car) licence. A motorhome weighing more than 3500kg requires a class C1 licence.
If you passed your test prior to 1997, your licence will probably have both classes on it. If you took your test in 1997 or later, and you have not taken a supplementary test for a larger vehicle, you will not be able to drive a motorhome weighing more than 3500kg.
Currently, only the Kentucky Corral 4 requires a class C1 licence.

Must we wear seatbelts in the rear of the motorhome?

UK law requires that children travelling in motorhomes must be properly restrained at all times. For adults, the law states that seatbelts must be worn where they are provided.
At Scarper, we insist that you do not carry more people than there are seatbelts for them to use, and that they use them at all times when the vehicle is moving. For details of the seatbelts in our motorhomes, please check the individual motorhome pages.

Can we take pets in your motorhomes?

Dogs are permitted in the Rimor Sailer and Chausson Flash motorhomes only. Please be aware that when you hire one of our vehicles, we expect them back reasonably clean and an extra cleaning charge will be levied should there be additional mess (hairs on beds etc) in the vehicle.

What is the difference between a motorhome and a campervan?

A motorhome is completely self-contained, with all the facilities that you need such as a kitchen, a toilet and a shower. A campervan may not be as fully equipped.
In addition, most campervans are really only designed for two people, so a motorhome is essential for family holidays.

Must I use a campsite?

In a word, no, although most motorhome users prefer the convenience of the on-site facilities provided by most camp sites.
Remember that a motorhome only carries a limited amount of water, and can only heat relatively small quantities at any one time. You must also consider the disposal of waste water and emptying the toilet cassette.
There is also battery life to take into account.

How often must I empty the toilet cassette?

A family of four, using the motorhome toilet rather than site facilities, will fill the cassette at least once a day.
This isn't as bad as it sounds, since the process is quite easy and, thankfully, odour-free!

If I don't have mains electricity, how long will the battery last?

There is a separate leisure battery that only powers the living area lights and the television. It will last for at least a week without recharging.
If you are planning on spending more than one week without driving the motorhome, we recommend hiring a portable generator to ensure that the battery remains healthy.
